6,000 books to choose from at fair
Source : The Star
Date : 25 Apr 2005

OVER 6,000 books, covering a host of subjects, will be displayed by more than 20 exhibitors at the upcoming Lifelong Learning Book fair.

Visitors can expect exciting discounts at the fair, which will be held at The Curve in Mutiara Damansara from tomorrow to May 2.

Early birds, arriving within the first three hours on the first day, will be able to enjoy special discounts of 35% and more.

Books will be sold at discounts of 20% and above after 1pm on the first day and also throughout the rest of the fair.

The largest exhibitor, MPH Bookstore, which is taking up to 12 booths, will display a variety of books that include both easy and niche reading.

Its senior marketing manager Donald Kee said the bookstore's theme, Enrichment Beyond Knowledge, was related to MCA's Lifelong Learning campaign.

“Our theme tells people that reading is more than just gaining knowledge because it will also help them to change their lives,” he said.

MPH has also invited writers such as Mike Francis, Azizi Ali, Dr Peter Shepard and Joey Yap to speak on topics ranging from self-development to financial management.

Another exhibitor, Popular Book Co (M) Sdn Bhd, which is taking up 10 booths, will also have special discounts and interesting activities lined up for visitors.

Its store manager, Teh Lay Ngoh, said selected books would be sold at a 50% discount.

According to her, Popular will also hold a story-telling session, a musical performance and a motivational talk by a teacher who is disabled.

MCA Lifelong Learning Secretariat director Quek Ngee Meng said visitors should look forward to the activities at the fair.

“In addition to the motivational talks, there will be talks on dyslexia and other disabilities and on parenting skills. Personalities will also be sharing their views on the reading culture,” he said.

The book fair, he added, was part of MCA's efforts to generate a greater supply of books.

“We have asked MCA divisions to organize small book fairs in rural areas and villages so that people who live there can get the chance to gain knowledge too,” he said.
