A person’s Life Gua dictates his or her positive and negative Directions (i.e. Favorable and Unfavorable directions). Two (2) main groups are identified – East and West – with the Life Gua of an individual falling under either group. Expectedly, those in the East Group share the same Favorable and Unfavorable Directions, and those in the West Group share the same Favorable and Unfavorable Directions.

These directions are determined via the use of the Luo Shu, which utilizes the Eight Trigrams (Ba Gua) in ascertaining the many different situations and factors affecting a person. Knowledge of the Eight Trigrams, Luo Shu and Life Gua even allows for predictive Feng Shui to be done; where the practitioner is able to foretell what is bound to happen to an individual, just by taking a careful glance at the place in which this individual lives or works!

The Life Gua concept falls under the study of Eight Mansions (Ba Zhai) – a method used and applied to a property’s interior to improve its Feng Shui. And one of the most classical treatises written on Ba Zhai is the `Eight Mansions Guiding Mirror’ (Ba Zhai Ming Jing), which touches on the usage of the Life Gua vis-à-vis Eight Mansions.

Put simply, when we know our Life Gua, we are able to identify which parts/sectors/corners of our homes and workplaces are most ideal for us, for specific activities, due to the presence of supportive Qi for these activities. And certainly, this will in turn help us improve our overall quality of life – the ultimate objective of Classical Feng Shui.
